"Supermarkets for Seniors"

"Supermarketing for Seniors" is a non-discriminatory shopping and case management program which was established in 1986 in response to the needs of a growing number of frail and elderly Greenwich residents who wanted to continue living in their homes but could no longer do so without a way to obtain groceries.

Referrals come by way of Greenwich Hospital, the Department of Social Services, family members and/or concerned friends. Any person 60 years of age or older is eligible, and the program is FREE. The clients served are a typical representation of the ethnic, religious and cultural diversity of the town. Many of the program's clients live in subsidized housing and 95% are described as low or very low income by the Connecticut Development Block Grant guidelines.

A unique aspect to our "Supermarketing for Seniors" program is that over half of our shoppers are physically active, retired senior citizens, living on fixed income, who choose to shop for a small stipend. This has proven to be a win-win situation, as both the frail elderly and the active elderly benefit from the program.
