Question: What inspired you to become a social worker?
Answer: My inspiration came from a guidance counselor in high school and a social worker at the YMCA who supported my family when we first arrived from Haiti. As the oldest son, I had to step up and take responsibility. Someone saw potential in me, a shy kid who liked to help, and that encouraged me to explore the impact of social work. After visiting Haiti in 8th grade and witnessing poverty, depression, and anxiety firsthand, I knew I had to make a difference. From that moment on, I made it my mission to give back, helping others while growing personally along the way.
Question: Can you share a memorable experience or moment from your career that made you proud to be a social worker?
Answer: A powerful moment in my career was when I went to Haiti after the hurricane to provide aid—it was incredibly humbling. Another unforgettable experience was seeing a student transform from feeling hopeless to graduating high school and heading off to college. Moments like these remind me of the incredible, life-changing power of social work.
Question: What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your work with JFS clients?
Answer: The most rewarding part of my work is seeing clients make progress through their own effort. Whether it's an individual or a family, being part of their journey and seeing them overcome challenges is truly fulfilling. The diversity of the people I work with gives me a chance to learn and grow every day, making each experience unique and impactful.
Queston: What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career in social work?
Answer: Always remember your "why." Social work is not about money; it’s about passion, purpose, and the drive to help people where they are. It’s not about selling products—it’s about changing lives. This work is a huge responsibility, but it is also incredibly rewarding. It’s real-life superhero work that requires heart, dedication, and commitment.
Question: What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your role as a social worker, and how do you overcome them?
Answer: One of the toughest lessons I've learned is that you can't save everyone. You're only one person, and sometimes you have to accept that. The power of saying "no" is something I’ve come to embrace. Practicing self-care is essential—I’ve learned that you can’t pour from an empty cup. I use the tools I teach my clients: setting goals, taking time for myself, and giving myself grace.
Question: As we celebrate Social Work Month, what message would you like to share with the community about the importance of social workers?
Answer: Poverty, depression, stress, and anxiety affect everyone, regardless of race or background. As a Black Haitian man, I understand that therapy and mental health support aren’t always embraced in our community, but what you don’t address will catch up to you. Every day, challenge yourself to be better, and if you fall, get back up. Nobody is perfect, but we can all keep moving forward.
